The U.S. government committed about US$ 90 million in USAID forest projects in Peru from 2010 through 2019. This is according to data from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The U.S. government (USG) provides foreign assistance because it is strategically, economically, and morally imperative for the United States and vital to U.S. national security. – USAID
During the same decade, the U.S. imported about US$ 200 million of forest products from Peru.
After 2015, the value of Peruvian forest products imported into the U.S. dropped dramatically.
In 2019, USAID committed more dollars in foreign assistance for forest projects in Peru, than Peru received from exports of forest products to the United States.
Despite a decade of USAID foreign assistance for forest projects in Peru, tree cover loss in the country continues its upward trend.
In fact, in 2020, tree cover loss in Peru was 20% higher than it was in 2016. This was the largest change in tree cover loss of the Amazon countries of Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador.
