In one month, spanning December 2018 and January 2019, authorities in Indonesia have seized 384 containers of wood originating from the provinces of Papua and West Papua.
Here’s a brief list of the four operations:
- 40 containers of Merbau wood estimated at over US$ 800,000 seized in Surabaya
- 57 containers of Merbau wood seized in Makassar Port
- 88 containers of wood seized at the Port of Tanjung Perak
- 199 containers of Merbau wood seized in Surabaya
Merbau (Intsia spp.) appears to be the primary species involved. Merbau is a popular decking and hardwood flooring species.
