Although Brazil and Peru have significantly more forest resources, Guatemala and Mexico make up roughly 85% of the forest-grown Genuine Mahogany (Swietenia spp.) imported into the United States.
Importantly, Guatemala accounts for the majority of forest-grown Genuine Mahogany shipments to the U.S. while at the same time conserving the same forests from which this lumber originates.
New FSC-certified Genuine Mahogany production has recently come on line in Brazil however and it remains to be seen how this will effect demand and pricing for Central American suppliers of Genuine Mahogany.
